Existing US building codes limit the longitudinal reinforcement yield stress of reinforced concrete columns. To reduce the amount of reinforcement required to resist earthquakes, the origins of these constraints were revisited and a feasibility study of steel yield stresses above 550 MPa was undertaken. The assumed cross-section analysis data and related experimental data indicate that for columns with axial loads below the equilibrium point, the reduction of longitudinal reinforcement is not related to the reduction of the strength and the limiting curvature. Analysis and test results show that the reduction of steel bars in the column is proportional to the increase of yield stress.
