Secret Spell of Yangtze River is a good book, like a low cost commercial film, which does not necessarily win applause but draws well.
First of all, stunt abounds - the Yangtze River taboo, tomb zombie, Wu people, Ba people, Chu people, all kinds of monsters from the book Mountain and Sea Classics, plus the adventure of outsiders. Seeing these, any normal readers who still have curiosity about the outside world would be stepped on sciatic nerve, feel excited and desired to read it. As adventure novels put originality in the first place, this one can be given a high mark.
The reason why I said Secret Spell of Yangtze River is a low cost commercial film is that its pattern appears slightly small at present. It is hard to avoid lots of private whisper and inner monologue as it is told by first person. Readers have to worry for the hero; thus reading by instinct slowly becomes serous and cerebral reading. But then again, this is also another kind of fun for adventure novels. Follow the protagonist’s footsteps, imagine what would happen next step, and then see whether e your guess can be consistent with the protagonist’s.
Of course, as an adventure novel, along with all such novels, is faced with the same question: how to steer clear of the three landmark novels: Ghost Blows out the Light, Note on Grave Robbery and The Tibet Code. Thanks to the three novels, an adventure novel boom has been perpetuated for long. Some newcomers fail because they simply follow suit or imitate. However, Secret Spell of Yangtze River solved this problem well. Although it has all the elements of adventure stories, it obviously does not rest on the simple level of adventuring for adventuring. It centers on the mysterious culture of Yangtze River and builds up a weird folk world in Yangtze River.
What is happening in the Yangtze River? How many secrets and stories are buried under the turbid water? Readers don't know, while only the author knows.
