The exact role of retained austenite in hardened steel is a matter of long standing debate among people engaged in heat treatment. The experimental work necessary to solve this problem has been limited by the lack of a simple and effective assay technique that can be used in general laboratories. According to some recent comments from automotive manufacturers on the role of retained austenite, the quality inspection of heat-treated parts requires the inclusion of the austenite number (typically the maximum). People are generally concerned about carburized carburized carburized layer of residual austenite.
