CLIP 1
This is the time of year when people make their New Year’s resolutions. At the beginning of a new year, people 1)take stock of their lives and decide to make some changes.
A lot of people want to get into shape. They vow to go to the health club and 2)work out everyday. Many people also decide to go on a diet. After 3)overindulging at holiday meals, people feel the need to 4)cut back and to 5)shed some extra pounds. Many people also promise to quit smoking or drinking to live healthier lives.
Whatever resolution you make, don’t forget the most important one: promise not to have to make the same resolution next year.

Craig: Hi! I’m with Ronnie Virgets. How are you, Ronnie?
Ronnie: Hey Craig! How’re you doing, man?
Craig: All…all right. Well, tell me, do you do a New Year’s resolution?
Ronnie: Do I do a New Year’s resolution? I have never done a New Year’s resolution in…low many years because I never was…uh…frankly able keep anything for more than a week. So I figure why disappoint myself? (Laugh) But…but I tell you what, this uh…you know…this may be and I…I haven’t finished thinking all of it yet. This may be the time to make a resolution. So I’m…Even though like I say, I haven’t made one in 25 years, I may be changing my tune. I just haven’t figured that out yet.
Craig: Right, right. Well you know, like you said, this…this might be the year to do it.
Ronnie: Right, right, exactly.
Craig: Well, Ronnie. Thank you so much. Enjoy talking to you again. Thank you very much.

Paul Young: The start of the new year is a good time to examine our life and decide how to improve. Making a New Year’s resolution gives us a chance to make useful changes and to live better in the coming new year.
Mary Chen: Making resolutions at New Year by yourself is not so much fun as doing it together with friends and with family. Then everybody can check up on each other. So there is a better chance that you’ll actually carry out what you resolve. Try it in a group.
其中not so…as… 词组check up on意为“(秘密)调查”。
Keith Pan: I make my New Year’s resolutions every year even though I don’t carry them out all the time. Making a New Year’s resolution gives me belief to live better and healthier. To some extent, it helps me to recognize my 6)defects and pushes me to change the bad habits. And if I don’t carry out the resolution, well, there’s always next year.
词组all the time意为“一直,始终”,相当于always。
Gwen Smith: Why use the New Year to 7)frustrate yourself and make a resolution to do something that you know you’ll never do? All you end up being is 8)guilty that you didn’t 9)accomplish your resolution. If you really want to improve yourself or your life, you should make a resolution every day, or any time, and then act on it seriously. I don’t think it’s something worthwhile to do.
词组end up(结束,告终)后跟动名词,即end up doing sth.。
Tom Ho: As we are creatures of both good and bad habits, making changes is difficult to manage successfully even though it would be good for us. Besides, the
10)radical change of routine may not be healthy. For instance, overweight people often start exercising too much and have a heart attack. We should think twice before making a New Year’s resolution.
