Saudi Aramco has installed and tested eight different types of multiphase flow meters (MPFMs) over the past few years. Given the size and weight of the offshore platform, these newly developed small MPFMs are mainly used for unattended platforms on the sea and for marginal onshore oil fields. MPFM provides continuous measurement of the well for easier and more accurate production scheduling and better reservoir management. If MPFM is successfully used in production operations to conduct on-line testing of well production, the company eliminates the need for large conventional separators, metering lines, and marine metering vessels. As it can greatly reduce the oil well measurement investment and operating costs, which can get huge economic benefits. The pilot plant covers a wide range of multiphase flow applications on six different fields. The purpose of field testing is to determine the ability of each meter to accurately measure the flow of oil, gas and water and to determine the reliability of the meter at a given site. Then, the field test results for each of the MPFMs were compared to conventional metrology separators. This article will review multiphase flow measurement techniques and discuss in detail the Saudi Aramco MPFM evaluation project
