对于《春秋》的诠释,历代学者都是秉承各自家法,遵循一定的义例进行。义例发展到后来,更是繁密庞杂,难以适应社会的需要,严重影响了《春秋》学的发展。胡安国时代,由于时势变迁,社会需要,理学思想开始流行,影响并改变了《春秋》诠释的传统。胡安国正是适应这种变化,将理学的核心概念作为诠释《春秋》纲领,结合当时的时势,阐发《春秋》的新的大义思想。并通过对理的阐发和运用,极大地发挥《春秋》尊王攘夷的微言大义思想,使《春秋胡氏传》体现了宋代解经的鲜明特征,从而获得极大的成功。
