Several experimental cancer therapies use iodine to enhance the cell killing efficacy of ionizing radiation. The researchers chose to incorporate iodine into the DNA of cancer cells, making the tumor more sensitive to radiotherapy than the surrounding normal tissue, which may reduce the patient’s side effects during current conventional radiotherapy. Researchers believe that the above methods, when used for treatment, are expected to destroy many current refractory cancers. Radiotherapy experts at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the US generally use radiotherapy for advanced, severe (usually incurable) glioblastoma brain tumors or other metastatic cancers. Prior to radiotherapy, iododine (IdUrd) was administered intravenously. IdUrd is a congener of DNA thymidine, which is one of four bases and usually encodes genetic information into DNA.
