Commercial starch hydrolysis was first conducted in the United States in 1842, and sweetener was produced from corn in the first facility in 1866. Since then, the wet corn processing industry in the United States has seen tremendous growth. Today, more than 5% of the natural sweeteners consumed by the United States come from corn. Taking into account food losses, the annual consumption of single high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in the United States is estimated at 43 pounds (19.5 kg) per person. The corn processing industry uses more than 535 million bushels (13.59 million tons) of corn to produce HFCS - accounting for more than 5% of annual U.S. corn production, and diversification of products allows corn processors to shift starch production to other fermentation products and / or Bio-products, including ethanol, organic acids, amino acids, polyols, trehalose, polylactic acid, and new product reform are the keys to the power of the corn wet processing industry, which has led the industry into a new era with far-reaching prospects.
