Man Aspires after Happiness, through describing some small potatoes in Benxi and telling stories happening on them, shows continuous pursuit of happiness for groups and individuals living in the city in various periods in China.
This work is profound, majestic, rich and full of cultural atmosphere. “Profound” is embodied in the part of the work where the author recalled the reproduction of ancient humans on a mountain in Benxi. As the author Zhang Zhenglong says, this is to let everyone understand how we evolve step by step from an ancient era and what enlightenment we can get from the history. “Majestic” is embodied in that this book puts Benxi under different historical periods in China to consider and discuss, and connects the reformation of old industrial bases in the Northeast and Benxi people’s struggle with historic development of China. “Rich” is embodied in the work where it tells colorful stories of different people through interviewing numerous people of different personalities. “Humanity” is embodied in the work where it reflects the understanding of each period of life story. When Zhang Zhenglong interviews someone, he must stare at the interviewee while taking notes. What this book reflects is the common people’s joys, sorrows, separations and reunions. In addition, it tells their thought, comprehension on society and life, as well as love view, values and so on. For instance, it depicts a very poor young man who can’t afford to buy a popsicle for his girlfriend and then he feels the look of his girlfriend is like a whip lashed on his face. Such detail description highlights the author’s caring for people.
It is easy to find from this work that there is tacit understanding between the interviewees and the author, because the author can mobilize the interviewee’s a review of the past and guide them to express their true feelings. This work tells us that we should always keep a curious heart toward this world, understand where happiness comes from and what things we can do for pursuing happiness.
