Museum in Memory of Artist’s Great Career
By Zhu Shengwei, Zhu Jingyan, Wang Jianchao
The 86-year-old Sun Daolin, a celebrated film artist, and his family arrived at Jiashan in East China’s Zhejiang Province early on the morning of February 2, 2007 to attend the opening ceremony of a cinematic art museum named after him. A high profile artist of the 20th-century Chinese film, Sun has appeared in more than 100 films and dramas over a 50-year-long acting career. Many of the vivid characters he created are part of the country’s best silver-screen memories.
The Sun Daolin Cinematic Art Museum is the nation’s first ever comprehensive cinematic museum named after a film artist. In addition to the exhibits that relate a vivid account of the veteran’s career, the museum highlights the 100-year silver-screen glories in China. The Shanghai Film Group generously supported the project by taking part in the display arrangement and providing original exhibits such as photographs.
The 7,200-square-meter museum consists of the exhibition, research and projection sections, where visitors can view the glories of Sun’s career, peep into exciting highlights of the Chinese cinematic history over the past 100 years, see the replications of the original production settings of some Sun-related films, and watch films in a four-room multiplex cinema. Exhibits include the stills and posters of Sun’s films since 1954, life-size wax figures, duplicated props, etc.One of the sites at the museum is a good replica of the original house where the undercover Communist radio transmission operator lived and worked in the film.
The museum is equipped with high-tech devices which can automatically play back a voice-narration once people come within a distance of related exhibits. Multi-media devices are also installed, at two sites, to replay the original behind-the-scene featurettes of the 1986 Interim President in which Sun Daolin played Dr Sun Yat-sen and Sun’s own study at home.
On the morning scheduled for the grand opening of the museum, Sun, dressed elegantly in a beige-colored suit and with a checkered scarf, and his family arrived more than an hour before the grand opening in order to tour the museum first. Afflicted withpoor health, Sun usually moves about in a wheelchair nowadays. Excited this morning, however, Sun got out of the wheelchair and walked around with the assistance of his daughter. He stood in front of a photo of his mother for a long while. He put on an earphone to hear his own voice talking about his cinematic version of Thunderstorm, a modern classic of Chinese drama in the early 20th century. When the 22-year-old Cao Yu first published the epoch-making drama in 1934, Sun was a middle school student. At the beginning of his acting career, Sun played a character in a stage show of the drama. In 1984, Sun directed his film version of Thunderstorm. The museum has an exhibition hall to display a production site of the film.
At the ceremony, Sun’s daughter spoke, expressing gratitude to the hometown people and friends for honoring her father for his acting career. Sun’s wife Wang Wenjuan, a celebrated Yue opera artist, said that the family was vastly pleased with the museum. She said, 襂t is beautiful and stately. Many of his fans in Shanghai will come over to visit the museum. I will come back with family members and friends when the pond is planted with lotuses.?(Translated by David)
