In 2005, China allocated 127 billion yuan of government funding for research and development, which doubled that of 2000. The average annual growth rate of research and development expenditures for the entire Chinese society is 20%, with expenditure of 236 billion yuan last year, or 1.3% of GDP. In 2005, the export of high-tech products in the country reached 218.15 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 28.6% of the total exports. In 2005, the State Intellectual Property Office handled a total of 476,200 patent applications, an increase of 34.6% over the same period of last year, the highest growth rate in the past 20 years.
