“May Fourth Legacy” is Zhang Ailing’s masterpiece, formerly Zhang’s English novel Stale Mates. The difference between the two story texts is very small, but Zhang Ailing himself denied that the May Fourth legacy was a translation by Stale Mates. Domestic translation researchers have studied these two texts from several perspectives, such as translation ethics, readers ’expectations of field of vision, etc., however, they all generally directly default to Stale Mates’ translation, which is a translation of Stale Mates, but it is not directed at Eileen Chang My Negation Expounds “On the May 4th Legacy” from the Perspective of Ontology. This article investigates the translation identity of “May Fourth Legacy” and demonstrates that the novel is a translation of Stale Mates from the perspective of rewriting and self-translation, and then puts forward a view of deconstruction: Rather than translation of Stale Mates Say Stale Mates is a translation of the May Fourth legacy.
