The “going global” strategy of the Zhejiang University Press starts from original publishing of science and engineering books. With the “China Scientific and Technological Progress” series in cooperation with Springer Group (an international scientific publishing house), the Press gradually explores and develops a work pattern and development road featured by using brand cooperation to promote the development of export-oriented selection of works, the standardized construction of academic publishing procedures, and the synchronous “going global” of paper books and digital products.
We stick to the road of brand cooperation and expanding new cooperation partners. Since 2006, Zhejiang University Press has insisted on the “going global” strategy of brand cooperation and mutual development, establishing long-term publishing cooperation projects with Springer Group and Reed Elsevier PLC Group which have been listed in the top ten of Top 50 world publishing houses for many years, Singapore World Scientific Publishing Company that is praised as the number one brand of Asian publishing, Spain Future Publishing House that is the host of international matches in the construction design field and KU Leuven Publishing House which is an international famous university in Belgium. This year, we will continue to expand such successful cooperation pattern, releasing new projects with international academic research level, representing the strength of Chinese scholars, and comprehensively reflecting the progress and ideas of social and economic development. For example, during 2014 Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF), we will sign new publishing contracts and explore a sustainable development pattern with Cambridge University Press, as well as Routledge under Taylor & Francis Group, two of Top 50 world publishing houses.
The Zhejiang University Press expands the brand cooperation to humanity and social science fields by introducing successful experience of scientific and technological brand cooperation. After the cooperation with Springer Group in publishing “China Scientific and Technological Progress” series, the Press carries out large cooperation projects one after another represented by high-level academic works in science, such as the “Research Front of Intelligence Science and Technology in China” series and “Cleaning, Transforming and Efficiently Utilizing of Energy and Resources in China” series., The Press has established a good brand influence in the international scientific and technological publishing field. As a comprehensive university press who owns the most comprehensive subjects and categories in China and publishes several hundred academic works including humanity and social science fields, we try to make a breakthrough in promoting the successful pattern of international brand cooperation from science and technology books to humanity and social science publications. In 2013, we published “Chinese Enterprise’s Innovative Management” series by cooperating with World Scientific Publishing Company. In 2014, we will continue to carry out export projects of fine works’ rightss in humanity and social science fields. The contracting parties mainly include Routledge and Cambridge University Press under Taylor & Francis Group. We will carry out international cooperation projects about traditional cultural masterpieces of China in less popular languages (such as Italian).
By doing research on overseas market demand, we can accurately increase the percentage of rights export. This year, we will enlarge overseas distribution of Chinese books in libraries, find the key of hot topics (selection of topics) and difficult problems (translation) in Chinese-themed book rights export and struggle to find out the solutions. By improving the content quality of the rights trade of the press, we can increase the proportion of key highly-recommended books on the CBI website; by providing accurate services, we can enlarge the proportion of rights output in the Zhejiang University Press.
We should enhance the international spread of digital publishing, and expand the “going global” achievements of digital products. By virtue of the scientific research ability of Zhejiang University, Zhejiang University Press has finished digital transformation of the whole production process in recent years, with the digital publishing business related to digital books, digital journals, mobile reading, digital education, knowledge base of institutions, digital academic services, animations, cartoons and so on. The digital products are sold and displayed on international main-stream digital platforms and third-party platforms, such as Springerlink, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar and AppleAppsStore. In 2013, Zhejiang University Press became a national demonstration base of digital publishing. It’s worth mentioning that Zhejiang University Press, as a university press, is one of the few presses owning academic journals, publishing both journals and books. By building a strict appraisal system examined by international associates, Zhejiang University Press Journal (English Version) has grown from a university journal served for its own scholars into an international academic journal served for scholars all over the whole country even the whole world. In 2013, the proportion of articles from abroad accounted for 42 percent; the three journal branches enter into the index of SCI, an authoritative international index; the data of the digital English journals (A and B) can be downloaded by paying fees on internet platform of Springer—SpringerLink, ranking in the front of the project named “China Online Science Library”.
