People who use handkerchiefs today are not aware that the handkerchiefs were made on the orders issued by King Louis XVI of France on September 23, 1784. He specified that “the length and width of a handkerchief must be equal.” The explanation is simple: oval handkerchiefs were considered conservative at the time, and material wasted. Handkerchiefs have existed for a long time before they reached France. The first mention of handkerchiefs was in the 3rd century BC, only the Greek and Roman nobility used it. Their frequent and extravagant banquets, which require sweat from time to time, have “invented” handkerchiefs for wiping sweat called “sweatshirts.” People who are fortunate enough to carry sweatshirts always snuck their noses at the same time as wiping sweat. Early in that era, the public (provincial) noses were seen as extremely uncivilized.
