The shipping industry in the western world is currently in a very difficult situation. The freight volume of ships is insufficient and the crisis is deepening. From 1979 to 1981, seaborne trade fell by 8%, and the voyage was shortened, which has fallen by 11% in tons/nautical miles. Existing ships are not yet fully loaded, and orders for the construction of new ships are even more reduced. The load capacity of the fleet increased by only 2% in 1979-1981. The main cause of the difficulties is the economic recession in Western countries and the contradictions in foreign trade. Difficulties in the Western shipping industry, especially oil tankers and solid bulk carriers are the most prominent.
