为了实现由内圣开出新外王的文化理想,牟宗三把是否具有客体精神作为评判中国哲学的标准,并藉此对孔孟荀进行理论定位。孔子的精神表现是主观精神与客观精神的合一,即绝对精神或天地精神;孟子以主观精神为主导,由主观精神透至绝对精神;荀子则纯是客观精神,但因其客观精神无主观精神作为内在根基,所以非真实的客观精神。在这三种精神表现形态中,孔子的绝对精神是最智慧、最圆融的精神形态。
