著名作家姚雪垠的长篇历史小说《李自成》是中国当代文学里程碑式的作品。全书共五卷,总计350余万字。第一卷于1957年开始创作、1963年首次出版,至1999年五卷全部出齐,前后历时42年。2013年12月9日,在中国现代文学馆召开的“《李自成》出版50年座谈会”上,专家们一致认为,这部史诗性的巨著经受住了时代的考验,至今仍然焕发着深厚的艺术魅力。部分参与和见证了《李自成》创作、出版过程的老同志,还亲切地回忆了姚雪垠数十年如一日,克服种种困难潜心写作的具体情形和以生命投入创作的崇高精神。在《李自成》出版50周年之际,中国青年出版社推出了增补8万余字遗稿的新版《李自成》,同时出版了由姚海天策划、刘起林主编的《文学“马 Famous writer Yao Xueyin’s long historical novel Li Zicheng is a landmark work of Chinese contemporary literature.
