自明清以降,广东特殊的地理位置使其成为中国最早向外界开放的地区,这里的人们总是能最先接受外来的信息,他们思维活跃、闯荡四方,而潮汕地区向来是著名的侨乡,历史上革命者和实干家辈出。上世纪80年代以来,广东作为中国经济体制改革与观念变革最突出的地区,其在中国开放改革进程中的特殊位置,决定了广东籍艺术家特殊的生存经验及文化向度。在2003年威尼斯双年展上,一群广东艺术家的出现吸引了国内国际的目光。由于那一年“非典”蔓延,本来筹划已久的威尼斯双年展中国馆的首次亮相被搁置,迫于传染病的传播危险及政治影响,官方筹划已久的展览活动与艺术家及策展人的行程纷纷取消。而与官方指定的艺术家截然相反的是,广东的年轻艺术家群体似乎继承了前辈们的无畏精神,没有政府的帮助而自发组织前往威尼斯参展,弥补了中国馆艺术家未能亮相威尼斯
