During World War II, Chiang Kai-shek nearly died of a well-planned murder by a planner who was neither a Japanese agent nor a traitor, not a local warlord, but the U.S. President Franklin whom he regarded as master Roosevelt. In December 1943, when Stilwell attended the Cairo Conference with Chiang Kai-shek, Roosevelt said to Stilwell, “If you can not get along with Chiang and you can not replace him, you’ll have to kill him once and for all.” And hopes to see China “emerge as a new political leader with a genuinely democratic spirit and cooperative attitude.” Stilwell ordered his deputy, General Doon, to implement this oral directive from Roosevelt.
