“‘船’系列是刘卫平逐步认识自己的艺术个性的标志。……又是令刘卫平自己的艺术性格得以通畅地流露出来的结果。”这是钟涵先生的《场外人语》中的一段话,当时刘卫平画了“船”系列,是在1987年。随后是《人和船》,到近几年又有《渡者》,等等,“船”系列一直在延续。如果我们一直看下来,就容易看出他的思路,他那斟酌有度的油画持续在油彩和笔墨意识的通融和演绎中,主旋律是对类似于“把绘画安置到绘画地位”(林风眠语)的执着追求。
