Hardy was deeply influenced by the Bible, in which he made extensive use of biblical allusions. To some extent, the Bible prototype is an important medium for the author to express his thoughts in this novel. This thesis explores the archetypal “Bible” in Jude the Obsidian from the four perspectives of personages, themes, structures and images in an effort to prove that “Jude” is an elegy he wrote for the Victorian era.
