阿拉伯裔美国作家莱拉·赫拉比的《曾经的应许之地》,是一部关注阿拉伯-穆斯林身份困境的后“9·11”小说。该小说通过伊斯兰文化的代表符号“水”传达出亲近自然、适度消费的和谐生态理念,同时以消费文化的象征“真丝睡衣”昭示出控制自然、过度消费的人类中心主义思想,隐喻西方基督教文明奴役、统治自然的傲慢态度。小说借“水”表现出伊斯兰文化的积极内涵,通过“水”与“真丝睡衣”的矛盾,展演了伊斯兰与西方在另一个层面的矛盾冲突,进而揭示了后“9·11”语境下“文明”西方的暴力机制。
