Preliminary analysis shows that the reason that the Hercules 4 missile exploded shortly after taking off from Vandenberg AFB in early August was that a solid rocket motor of the booster was burned through. This initial analysis was provided by Colonel Charles F. Stirling, head of the Hercules program center at the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center. In early August, the United States Air Force set up a Hercules 4 trouble-shooting committee headed by Colonel John B. Hungerford Jr., deputy director of the launch program of the Space and Missile Systems Center, to study the cause of the Hercules 4 explosion. At the same time, Hercules Planning Office has also formed a failure analysis team to speed up the search for the cause of the malfunction.
