Turkey is rich in water resources but has become a strategic resource because of the water shortage in the area where it is located. In the second half of the 20th century, Turkey made great efforts in water resources planning and development. However, half of the undeveloped reserves so far developed. Rapid population growth, irrigated agriculture and industrial development have placed higher demands on the quantity and quality of water resources. The completion of the South East Anatolia Project (GAP) and several other projects require Turkey to devote a significant portion of its financial and technical resources to water resources development.
