自从电子计算机问世后,差不多就已开始了企图利用计算机进行翻译的设想和努力,但是几经挫折之后,才认识到这并不是一桩轻而易举的事。除了电子计算机本身的性能有待发展和完善外,人们认识到还得要有语言学基础理论的研究,方能为机器翻译提供科学的语言学模型。在美国乔姆斯基的现代语言学理论基础上形成的数理语言学的出现适应了这一要求,并被成功地运用于电子计算机翻译的研究工作上。徐振远《现代语言学与机器翻译系统》对这一边缘学科作了详尽的介绍。
Ever since the advent of electronic computers, ideas and efforts to use computers to translate almost have begun, but it has not been easy to realize after several setbacks. In addition to the performance of the computer itself needs to be developed and perfected, people realized that they must also have the basic theory of linguistics in order to provide a scientific linguistic model for machine translation.
