TOPEX / POSEIDON satellites were ground-based, three-axis stabilized satellites launched on August 10, 1992. Two identical Earth Sensor Assemblies (ESAs) are included in the full suite of sensors for attitude measurement and control subsystems. Each ESA provides rolling and pitching two-axis attitude error measurements, which are commonly used for on-board computer (OBC) fault detection and correction logic and can also be used as the primary attitude measurement during OBC initial acquisition processing and earth-pointing safety-hold mode operation . Shortly after launch of the TOPEX / POSEIDON satellite, anomalies in Earth’s sensor signals were observed. This article describes the on-orbit performance of the earth sensor and the software modifications that have been implemented. These software modifications ensure that satellites’ response to unusual data will not adversely affect satellites or missions. This article also discusses the relationship between the abnormal mechanism of ESA and the action of charged particles. The work was commissioned by NASA’s Jet Engine Laboratory at Caltech.
