Mathematical issues involved in population growth The world population has doubled in number in recent centuries. By 2000, the total global population is ten times that of 300 years ago. Why population growth will be so rapid? Let us imagine a “family tree,” the top of the tree is two parents, the next is their children, and the next is the children born of these children. Every generation after that is so down. As long as family members continue to breed, each generation will have a larger population than the previous generation and the size of this family tree will continue to expand. By the same token, the world’s population is also growing according to this law.
