Roland Butter, in some ways, removes the line between elegant and pop culture, recognizing that pop culture has the complexities of being uniquely perceived as elegant culture. For the “elegant culture” it is imitating and the “popular culture” it replaces, popular culture is clearly seen as inferior. This contempt and condemnation of popular culture runs through the full text of The Myth. At the same time, Bart hated intellectuals for evading ideological judgments in popular culture and believed that intellectuals should have the courage to reveal the hidden truth behind mass culture.
