National Technologies Systems Inc. is developing an advanced tangential camera NDT method to detect delamination in composite honeycomb structures and solid rocket propellants. It is believed that this technique is more practical than other detection methods such as holography, dye penetration, X-ray and conventional interferometry, and greatly increases the speed of detection. The company said that tangential photographic methods are particularly useful for detecting surface strain and for delaminating large composite surfaces such as the wing and the fuselage. A similar detection technique is being used to detect the honeycomb and composite structures of the B-2 stealth bomber. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved the use of tangential photography to test aircraft tires.
