In 1965 Gold and Freedman first isolated the Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) from colon cancer. CEA was originally thought to be a specific marker of colon cancer. Since then, the work of many researchers has shown that many other types of cancer patients, very strong smokers or some other non-malignant conditions, also have elevated CEA levels in the blood. Thus, CEA cannot be used for actual screening of tumors. However, some preliminary results indicate that CEA is of great value in monitoring the course of cancer treatment. Three years ago, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized a company to manufacture and sell kits of radioimmunoassay kits for monitoring tumors.
