Philomena: I’ve kept what happened to me buried away for 50 years. My father just left me with the nuns, he was so ashamed. He told everyone I was dead. My family never visited me. After you’d had your baby, you had to stay in the abbey[修道院] for four years. In order to repay the sisters[修女] for taking you in, you had to work. The worst jobs were in the laundry[洗衣房]. That’s where they put me. I worked there seven days a week, the whole time I was there. I worked there with my best friend, Kathleen. We were allowed to see our children for an hour a day.
Kathleen: Come on.
Philomena: That was all.
Nun: Walk, don’t run!
Kathleen: Mary! Anthony: Mummy!
(Philomena kisses Anthony)
Martin: So, were you just trapped[使陷入困境] there the whole time?
Philomena: You could only leave if you paid them a hundred pounds. But where would I get that kind of money? And where would I go? I remember that day so clearly. We all knew what it meant when a big car arrived. Kathleen: Philomena, they’re taking Anthony. Philomena: No, no.
Kathleen: They’re taking him away.
Philomena: No. Where is he? (chases the car) Anthony! Anthony!
Martin: Cheers.
Barman: Been up to the Abbey?
Martin: Mm. Yes. Yes, it’s um...Things’re obviously very different now. The nuns are different. Not the same ones they had when the Magdalen注1 girls were there.
Barman’s mum: Sure. They’re all gone now!
Barman: We’ve had a few staying here, looking to find what happened to their sons or daughters. There is not many of them gets any joy from there.
Martin: And the big fire that destroyed[毁坏] everything. Do you know how that started?
Barman: I should think they put a match to[点燃] it.
Martin: Who?
Barman: The Sisters. Sure they had a great fire
in the field out the back.
Martin: What, so the Abbey wasn’t on
fire?
Barman: They had a bloody big
bonfire. Burnt all the records.
Thousands of ’em.
Martin: Why? I mean...
Barman: This is years ago. I suppose
they were embarrassed[局促不安的] about
selling all them babies to America.
Barman’s mum: And they don’t want
people telling tales.
Barman: That’s me mother.
Martin: You say they sold babies to Americans?
Barman: A lot of the Yanks[美国佬] came over to Ireland to look for babies. They were the only ones who could afford them.
Barman’s mum: £1,000. Jane Russell注2 bought a baby from Derry in 1952...the film star.
Martin: I can’t believe they sold babies.
Barman’s mum: She came in here looking for Bourbon[波旁威士忌酒], but they had to give her a glass of Paddy[指爱尔兰威士忌] instead. If you were a Catholic with£1,000, you could buy a baby. Jane Russell bought one to take home with her. But I’m not one to repeat
gossip[八卦].
Martin: No, no, I can see that.
Barman’s mum: Slainte.
Martin: Yes, cheers.
“Me mother”和“all them”均为不规范用法,规范用法应为“my mother”和“all of them”。
Martin: I’ve been sent a picture of Anthony, if you want to see it. Philomena: Oh. Yes, please.
Martin: With President Reagan. It’s from a woman we could meet tomorrow...called Marcia Weller. She’s an ex-colleague of Anthony’s.
Philomena: He looks very smart. Martin. (points to a man in the picture) This man looks just like you.
Martin: It is me. Michael Hess. I met him.
Philomena: Where?
Martin: At the White House.
Philomena: Dear God!
Martin: About ten years ago when I was with the BBC.
Philomena: What was he like?
Martin: I can’t remember. It was a Republican thing. I…
Philomena: You must remember something.
Martin: Why...he was by the door when we went...I shook hands with him.
Philomena: Well, what kind of a handshake did he have?
Martin: Ah, well, it was firm. I mean, I would remember if he’d had a weak handshake. You don’t get to that position with a...with a weak handshake.
Philomena: So he had a firm handshake, what else?
Martin: He was smart.
Philomena: I always kept him smart. And did you remember anything he said?
Martin: “Hello”?
Philomena: “Hello. Hello.”
Martin: Might’ve been “hi”.
Philomena: “Hello.”
Martin: He was polite.
Philomena: Well...Now, well, he was smart, and he had a firm handshake.
Martin: He said hello, which was...it was nice.
Philomena: He said hello. Hello.
Martin: He was polite.
Philomena: Oh, Martin!
Marcia: I...knew your son for about ten years. He was senior legal counsel[顾问] to both the Reagan and Bush administrations.
Martin: He didn’t do too badly, did he, Philomena?
Philomena: He’d never have got a job like that if he’d stayed with me. I think he’d have worked at McEverleys. That’s a firm of solicitors[律师] in Castlebar. Did he ever mention Ireland, Marcia?
Marcia: I don’t think so. Although I do have a number for his sister, Mary, who came over from Ireland with him.
Martin: Great.
Marcia: I can put you in touch.
Martin: Great, that’s excellent.
Philomena: He looks very happy here. Who’s this fella?
Marcia: That’s his friend Pete.
Philomena: And were you his girlfriend, Marcia?
Marcia: Oh...No. I don’t know if you knew, but he was gay. I used to accompany[陪伴] him when he’d go to official functions because being gay was frowned on in the Republican Party. But he was very charming[迷人的] and charismatic[超凡魅力的].
Philomena: Tell me, did he father[养育] any children?
Martin: Em…Philomena, Marcia’s just told us that Anthony was gay.
Philomena: Eh, well, I always knew that. But I just wondered if he might be bi-curious[
Martin: Bi-curious?
Philomena: A lot of the nurses I worked with were gay but one of them called Brendan told me he was bicurious. I don’t think he could make up his mind, Marcia. Marcia: He didn’t have any children. I’m sorry.
Philomena: Did Pete love him?
Marcia: Yes, he did.
Martin: Phil, how did you know he was gay?
Philomena: Well, he was a very sensitive[敏感的] little boy. And as the years rolled on, I always wondered whether he might be. When I saw the photograph of him in the dungarees[粗蓝布工装裤], there was no doubt in my mind.
Hi, a big fella here, not only he is my son, but he is my best friend.
He would frown on such a proposal[
Philomena: (watches Anthony’s video)
Would you look at him, Martin.
Martin: Wait.
Philomena: What?
Pete: What’s? What’s wrong?
Martin: You went to Ireland?
You went to Roscrea?
Pete: Yeah. Yeah, I took
him. He was looking for you,
Philomena.
Martin: That nun, I saw her at
Roscrea.
Philomena: Sister Hildegarde.
Martin: She’s older now but that was
definitely her.
Philomena: They always told me they didn’t know where Anthony was.
Pete: But...they...they told us that they couldn’t find you. They said that you had eh…abandoned[抛弃] him as a baby.
Martin: She’s been looking for him! She’s spent her whole life trying to find him.
Philomena: I did not abandon my child.
Pete: He’s eh...He’s there now.
Martin: What do you mean?
Pete: I had this huge standoff[僵局] with his...father. He wanted him buried in the U.S., but it was your son’s dying wish. You know, he said he wanted to go home. He’s buried at Roscrea.
Martin: Sister Hildegarde, it’s all right, I’m not going to hurt you. I just want to ask you a question. I’m a friend of Philomena Lee. I saw you on a video with her son. Now, when you knew they were looking for each other, why did you keep them apart?
Priest: We’re going to call the guards unless you leave here immediately.
Martin: I’m not leaving until she answers my question.
Priest: I’m sorry, I think your whole manner is absolutely
Martin: I’ll tell you what’s disgusting, is lying to a dying man. You could have given him a few precious[珍贵的] moments with his mother before he passed away but you chose not to. That’s disgusting. Sister Claire: Come on, Sister Hildegarde. You don’t have to listen to this.
Martin: Not very Christian, is it?
Sister Hildegarde: Wait! Let me tell you something.(Philomena approaches[接近] the room) I have kept my vow of chastity[贞洁] my whole life. Self-denial[克己] and mortification[禁欲] of the flesh...that’s what brings us closer to God.
Sister Claire: Sister Hildegarde...
Sister Hildegarde: Those girls have nobody to blame but themselves, and their own carnal[肉欲的] incontinence[不能自制].
Sister Claire: Sister Hildegarde, please!
Martin: You mean they had sex?
Sister Hildegarde: What’s done is done. What do you expect us to do about it now?
Philomena: Nothing. There’s nothing to be done or said. I’ve found my son. That’s what I came here for. Martin.
Martin: Hang on. Hang on. I’ll tell you what you can do. Say sorry. How about that? Apologise[道歉]. Stop trying to cover things up. Get out there and clear all the weeds and crap[垃圾] off the graves of the mothers and babies that died in childbirth.
Sister Hildegarde: Their suffering was atonement[赎罪] for their sins[罪恶].
Martin: One of the mothers was 14 years old!
Philomena: Martin, that’s enough.
Sister Hildegarde: The Lord Jesus Christ will be my
judge, not the likes of[像……
Martin: Really? Because I think if Jesus was here now, he’d tip you out of that wheelchair and you wouldn’t get up and walk.
Philomena: Stop! Stop! I’m sorry. I didn’t want to bring him in here like this to make a scene[
Martin: Why are you apologising? Anthony was dying of AIDS, and she still wouldn’t tell him about you.
Philomena: But it happened to me. Not you. It’s up to me what I do about it. It’s my choice.
Martin: So, what? You’re just going to do nothing?
Philomena: No. Sister Hildegarde...I want you to know... that I forgive you.
Martin: What? Just like that? Philomena: It’s not just like that. That’s hard. That’s hard for me. But I don’t want to hate people. I don’t want to be like you. Look at you.
Martin: I’m angry.
Philomena: Well, must be exhausting[筋疲力尽的]. Sister Claire, I wonder would you be so kind as to take me to my son’s grave. (leaves the room)
Martin: Well...I couldn’t forgive you.
