[West German Journal of Metalworking Technology, December 1977] Friction welding was invented by the Soviet Union in the 1950s. Before 1960, the British Welding Institute developed the first friction welding machine, but it went through the general application stage A long time. There are about 3,000 friction welding machines in the world, of which 1,000 are in Japan and the Soviet Union respectively. The world’s largest friction welder is Thomson Friction Welding Company of the United Kingdom for a machine tool factory in Singapore. The welder is used for welding middle carbon steel drill rods containing 1% chromium, the diameter of drill rods is 73-168 mm, the length is 9.14-12.2 m, the welding area is 20-120 m,
