In this year’s Bologna Children’s Book Fair, China Children’s Press and Publication Group set up an independent booth of about 100 square meters in the No. 26 exhibition hall where various European and American large scale and strong publishing houses were gathered in the Bologna International Convention Center and exported 46 kinds of books to UK and other countries at site and came to an agreement of cooperation in digital publishing with American publishing institution. Before this year's London Book Fair, a UK publishing house found China Democracy & Law Press with the help of the Social Sciences Academic Press (China) and asked whether the Democracy & Law Press would attend the fair. The UK publishing house did this because they were interested in the law related books published by the Democracy & Law Press. After the Frankfurt Book Fair, the news that Mo Yan won Nobel Prize greatly arouse the international publishing field including European and American publishing houses’ attention on China’s literary creation. It is clear that the categories of book which can draw attention from European and American publishing field varied from Traditional Chinese Medicine which was the main category of exported copyright at early stage. As the representative of western mainstream discourse system, European and American countries were the key targets that the domestic publishing companies tried to make breakthrough in “copyright export” in recent years. Proof by facts, through efforts in these years, these companies did make achievements in “copyright export” aiming at European and American market.
In 2006 and 2009, China respectively started the “project of overseas promotion of Chinese books” and “Chinese cultural works translation project” to encourage foreign publishing institutions to publish books themed on China through financial support. Till the end of 2012, the project of overseas promotion of Chinese books signed 1095 financial support agreements with 486 publishing institutions of 61 countries including USA, UK, France, Germany, Holland, Russia and many other European and American countries. In the 2012 list of publish of “project of overseas promotion of Chinese books”, novel Iron Road published by the Beijing Publishing House, picture book Street Annual Ring published by the New Century Publishing House, social science book Stories of My Ancestor: Matteo Ricci, Xu Guangqi and Sabatino de Ursis published by Zhejiang University Press and various academic books published by Higher Education Press and China Renmin University Press were published in corresponding language by publishing institutions of European and American countries including Canada, UK, Germany, France and Poland. This shows that publication of Chinese books in European and American countries has crossed over the icebreaking stage and gained momentum. Many publishing institutions have made coincident achievements through multifaceted efforts. A lot of star products of China Publishing Group were published in European and American countries. For example, Yu Dan’s Insights into the Analects published by Zhonghua Book Company were published in 21 languages in 27 versions and achieved outstanding performance in European and American Countries like France, Holland, Italy, etc. And its companion piece, Yu Dan's Insights into Zhuangzi was exported in two versions to France and will be published in Italy, Germany, Holland, etc, gradually appears on the markets of English speaking countries in Europe. People’s Literature Publishing House sold the copyright of the book Naprapathy to the famous international literature publishing group Penguin Group and sold the copyright of the book Old Furnace to the famous France literature publishing institution Editions Gallimard; People’s Music Publishing House sold the copyright of the book China Piano Works to the famous American music publishing institution Herend Publishing Company. In 2012, the group realized 573 overseas copyright exports (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan). Among all them, 423 were exported to European and American countries which counted 74% of the total exported volume. China Intercontinental Press exported 275 copyrights of books to more than 30 publishing institutions of over 20 countries. Most of these copyrights were exported to major European and American countries. Various publishing groups including Time Publishing & Media Co., Ltd. and Southern Publishing & Media Co., Ltd., also China Renmin University Press and Peking University Press all performed well in “copyright export” targeting on European and American countries. In channel aspect, China International Book Trading Group and China Educational Publications Import & Export Corporation Ltd. also made contribution in promotion. For example, while enhancing the export of traditional printed books, China Educational Publications Import & Export Corporation Ltd. also undertook the project of “Chinese Corner” planned by Hanban and gradually developed international exhibition business. In the future, the company is going to register publishing companies in European and American countries and cooperate with other units in exhibition business to hold the first “China Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair”, building a world leading international platform of exhibition of children’s book.
