Efforts have been made to develop a water-based drilling fluid system that achieves the performance of oil-based drilling fluids. Starch lubricant compositions are environmentally friendly, non-toxic and capable of stable dispersion in water-based drilling fluids. A mixture of water, starch, and lubricant can be used to prepare a starch lubricant composition in a steam-pressure cooker. The resulting water-soluble starch dispersant contains 1 to 10 μm diameter particles of suspended lubricant. Since these particles neither disperse nor coalesce, the dispersed material is dried with a cylinder and milled to form a dry, non-oily powder containing 28% by mass of lubricant. The indoor lignin sulfonate drilling fluid was tested at a dry powder content of 5 lb / bbl and the comparative lubricants used in the test were various commercial paraffins, esters and / or polybutenes. Standard laboratory tests show that the starch lubricant mixture reduces both API and HTF losses, and more importantly, the untreated base pulp has a coefficient of friction of 12% -2.5%, similar to oil-based drilling The average value of the liquid. Drilling fluids formulated with starch lubricant compositions typically contain only 0.5% by volume of lubricant and perform better than field drilling fluids with 3% by volume of lubricant. These exceptionally superior results, as well as the amount of conventional lubricant alone, show that the particle size and distribution of the lubricant in the system can improve lubricity. Therefore, it is reasonable to make further research on this formulation, including applying a field test to evaluate this latest patented technology.
