Charles Brockden Brown(1771-1810)is the first American professional writer in the 18th century.his masterpiece Wieland;or The Transformation published in 1798 which is the true beginning of Browns literary career.In this novel,the main narrator is Clara who narrates her story in an epistolary form.In order to reveal what the author wants to convey and add some artistic values,the author often shift the narrator.MOSt of the books artistic success,however,derives from Browns skilful manipulation of the point of view,both in the parts that Clara reports herself and those in which she records the speeches of others.The shifting of narrator really brings some benefits for his masterpiece from three aspects.Namely 1 Creating suspense 2 Revealing the psychological aspects of the characters through their behaviors 3 More convenient wav of showing the theme,all of the three aspects reveals where Wielands literature value lies.
