Lead in by showing a performance played by students in our school.
Step 2 Listening (on Page 38)
Part 1: Fill in the blank
Part 2: Fill in the chart—Listen again and compare the life and work of white and black people at that time.
Step 3 Reading
Part 1: Scanning—Scan the text in two minutes and answer the following two questions.
1. What did Nelson Mandela do when he was in prison?
2. What did Nelson Mandela do to help Elias after he went out of prison?
Part 2: Careful Reading—Find the sentences which can show Elias’ terrible feelings about his life in prison.
Pay attention to the words in bold. Why did Elias have such bad feelings ? Now, I will show you a short movie, let’s walk into his life in prison . (Show the movie)
Can you describe your feelings about the movie ? (Ask some students to answer)
Actually, Elias lived there for only 4 years but Nelson Mandela stayed there for 27 years. What qualities made him go through those terrible years and become the president finally? Show your opinions.(ask some students to say sth)
Step 4: An Interview
Nelson Mandela’s qualities influenced not only the South Africa but also the whole world. Now in order to make more people know him better, CCTV is planning to make a special report on him. So the journalist need interview Elias, the former guard, and Bob who is Nelson Mandela’s friend in the prison time. The content of the interview:
1.Their life in prison
2.Something Nelson Mandela has done that moved them.
3.The journalist should give a summary on Nelson Mandela’s qualities.
Work in groups of four to make a dialogue and act your dialogues out
Step 5 Summary and homework
Give a summary using the poem 《Invictus》
Write an essay on Nelson Mandela
Review the former reading and lead in new class.
