据《隋书·食货志》载:“高祖既受禅,以天下钱货轻重不等,乃铸新钱,背肉好,皆有周郭,文曰五铢”。针对市场上充斥着的南北朝后期品种繁多、大小轻重不等的货币,隋文帝为统一全国货币,于“开皇三年下令在各关以百钱为标准,京师和各州邸肆也都立榜置样,样不同者,即坏以铜、入官”。其后在开皇四年、五年又继续严令推行新钱,才使隋朝新钱得以统一,这种统一后的隋五铢,成为终隋一代的钱币。在后世的各种钱谱图录中,隋钱大体只有以下两种:
