Abstract Objective To evaluate whether Na + ions in sarcoplasmic reticulum of patients with hyperkalemic periodic paralysis increase by 3T23Na-MRI and to evaluate the therapeutic effect of drugs on muscle edema caused by sodium. Methods The study was approved by Ethics Committee and all subjects signed informed consent. Twelve patients with hyperkalemic periodic paralysis [mean age (48 ± 14) years] and 12 healthy volunteers (mean age, 38 ± 12 years) were pre- and post-challenge ) 1H and 23Na MR imaging of the calf. 23Na-MRI includes spin-density, T1 weighted and inverted recovery sequences.
