After a 1)shaky start, Miss Dudley gets her rule plan back on track.
Miss Dudley: Mom, what do you want on this list?
Mother: That we respect each other.
Miss Dudley: Can you give me an example of what you would class as respect from them?
Mother: We don’t 2)talk down to each other, which tends…
Loretta: 3)Negativity.
Mother: …to happen. Yes, negativity.
Miss Dudley: That’s a good word.
Loretta: Treat others how you want to be treated.
Miss Dudley: OK.
Mother: Homework must be done every day.
Miss Dudley: At 7:45 have breakfast, then off to school.
For once the family have cooperated. But will they stick to the rules?
Mother: Loretta, will you please come in the house, NOW!
After supper, Loretta’s already ignoring the new rules and 4)slacking on the dishwashing.
Usually, Mom would give in and do the washing up. But Miss Dudley’s determined that she enforces the rules.
Miss Dudley: …had to get the other two in and in the5)lounge, and then I’d just go out, not shouting at her, and just say “you need to put the bat and ball down and if you’re not gonna come inside and do the washing up, then you’re gonna go up to your room and you’re not gonna watch TV all night,” so you need to let her think about what the 6)consequences of that are.
Mom’s first tough line works, but Miss Dudley wonders if she can keep it up.
It’s seven AM on Thursday morning.
Miss Dudley: Oh this is brilliant! Five past seven and you’re up and dressed.
Mother: And she was in the shower before I got out of bed.
Miss Dudley: Last night it was extremely difficult to get through to Loretta and spent a long time talking to her. It is great that she’s up and she’s in a good mood and she’s really efficient this morning. She’s done her own ironing and she’s dressed and she’s drying her hair.
It’s Miss Dudley’s last day with Loretta. She needs something more. She wants to try a gamble that, if it works, could7)cement the change, but if it fails, could destroy Loretta’s confidence. Loretta will turn teacher to a class at her old primary school.
(After the class)
Miss Dudley: You were amazing in there! Did you feel like you were amazing?
Loretta: Yeah, I don’t know. I just thought it felt weird.
Miss Dudley: I’m so proud of you. I was, like, standing at the back and just really proud of you. Are you proud of yourself?
Loretta: Yeah.
It’s the end of the week and Miss Dudley calls both Mom and Dad to school to discuss how things will carry on without her.
Loretta is called in.
Miss Dudley: What we’ve been talking about in here is you and how proud we are of you and what we’ve agreed is that Mom will put in a hundred percent at home to stick to those routine and rules, and Dad will put it in at his, and we will do that in school. So this is something that you…you have to work at, and you’ve been working at it brilliantly this week.
Loretta: I’ve enjoyed the week.
Miss Dudley: It’s worthwhile, all this work, to see that change in a student. I wish that every kid—they needed a teacher in their home. I wish that they would have the opportunity to do it, because the change in Loretta this week is massive.
I think it’s just made me realize that, you know, we are taught to think about what’s going on with these kids at home and to think about what affects their learning and behaviour. It’s just remembering that every single lesson as a teacher and, you know, appreciating what is going on for these kids.
For a once 8)troublesome pupil, having a teacher in the house has been a life-changing experience.
Loretta: Before, like, I was really hot-headed and I just got angry really quick, but now, like, control of my anger more and I’m, like, apparently I’m a nice person.
