The average Internet company believes that in a stand-alone B2B e-commerce market, the advantages of being a pioneer are just a myth, and profitability is simply daydreaming. Paul Balrk, chief executive of Altrenergy, Inc., ignored the arguments. Before the advent of “emarketplace,” the company established an independent online energy trading center in 1996, the now-famous Altra market. Now one of only a handful of already profitable independent companies, this center is trading $ 8 billion in the first quarter of this year. Balcke said Altra’s goal is to have revenues of 65 million U.S. dollars this year and 100 million U.S. dollars by the end of next year. The company is also going to go public in 2003.
