Engineers at the University of Vermont embedded optical fiber sensors into the concrete walls of a new medical research laboratory. Mechanical engineer Dryver Huston and electrical engineer Peter Fuhr want to test the function of the fiber optic sensors in the building for the purpose of assessing the stress during the building’s construction; monitoring the vibrations of the building as it stands; and observing the fiber optic sensors serving the building. According to Huston, he and Fuhr embed 22 fiber-optic sensors in the first two weeks of September. By pouring the last piece of concrete at the end of September, they hope to set up fiber in more than half of the building elements in the new lab. Military researchers play a leading role in long-term research on intelligent structures, putting most of their energy into putting fiber optic sensors
