《公孙龙子·指物论》回答了“名”何以能指“实”,“物”何以能实现。“指”为“意之所趋”,即意识的意向性,“物”则是在意识中显现为实在的“物”。 《指物论》的宗旨“物莫非指,而指非指”意为:一切显现为实在的物都是意识意向性所指的对象,而意向所指的对象并不是作为精神活动的意向自身。 语言的指称性产生于意识的意向,所生,所以“名不为指”。“物”是意向的对象,但意向的对象不限于显现为存在的物,这是意识能动性的表现。
