Neural tube defects (NTDs) are one of the most common lethal and disabling birth defects and are particularly prevalent in northern China. It has been shown that the addition of folic acid to women during pregnancy can significantly reduce the risk of fetal NTDs. In addition, the genetic polymorphisms of enzymes associated with folic acid metabolism increase the susceptibility of individuals to NTDs by affecting folic acid or homocysteine metabolism.
