据日刊《东芝评论》1987年第8期报导,东芝公司为日本宇宙开发事业团研制出了日本实验舱用的长寿命、高可靠性(设计寿命为10年)的舱外机械手。这种高智能机械手将用来完成计划于1994年度分两次发射的日本实验舱的外部舱和补给舱的组装、支援加压舱内搭乘科学家完成各种科学实验、交换试验装置和试样等任务。日本东芝公司在研究该机械手的过程巾,吸收了产业机器人、智能机器人以及航天飞机机器人的开发经验,充分考虑了在微重力环境下的各种特殊要求,在具有多年机器人生产经验的小向工厂制造。
