Of course tourism also has a lot of advantages for an area. It boosts the economy, creates harmony and promotes cultural awareness. It just needs to be controlled and checked.
And at Milford Sound in New Zealand, there are also strict rules to beat the crowds. You can’t just show up and walk the Milford Track, you’ve got to book ahead to reserve the huts and route. Now there’s two types of huts—there’s a cheap and simple, and there’s the luxurious and expensive. One of the neatest things about this trail is you’re only allowed to walk in one direction, towards Milford Sound. With no one else coming the other way, it really does feel like it’s just you and nature.
Over half of tourists visiting New Zealand’s South Island travel to Milford Sound. That’s well over 500,000 a year. Yet its isolated beauty remains unaffected, thanks to its policy of monitoring tourists and safeguarding the area’s natural resources. Perhaps this is why Milford Sound was recently voted the world’s best destination.
