Pupils work harder for male teachers
Pupils work harder at lessons if they are taught by a man, a study has claimed. Male teachers are more 16______to improve pupils’ self-esteem and are judged by pupils to be more fair, according to a study 17by the Department of Education.
But 18is a significant shortage of male teachers, especially in primary schools, 19reports indicating that almost one in three primaries has an all-female teaching staff. The 20figures reveal that schools are becoming run by women and children are being denied 21to male role models in the classroom.
Researchers at the London School of Economics, did an experiment 22each of 1200 pupils in 29 schools 23£2. They could use the money to “buy” 2410 questions at a cost of 20 pence each, which they then had to answer. If they were right they would be given an extra 20 pence, 25they were wrong they would 2620 pence. Boys and girls who had a male teacher chose almost half a question more than 27taught by women, showing that they had a 28positive outlook on the rewards of effort, the study said.
Researchers wrote, “One of the most significant results featured in this experiment 29the positive effect of male teachers on effort. The experiment suggests 30higher ability pupils either believed that the teacher would reward them more favorably 31had a preference for working hard to please the teacher.”
According to the Good Teacher Training Guide, 86 percent of new teachers entering primary schools are female, 3262 percent of those entering secondary schools. Professor Alan Smith, of Buckingham University, said, “This is an interesting and 33surprising finding, but it 34underline the importance of having a good mix of male and female teachers in 35 .”

Getting them out
After two weeks of uncertainty, construction worker Ling Qinghao was
finally able to keep in touch with his wife in their hometown in Anhui Province, and tell her that he was safe.
Ling, 44, was one of the thousands of Chinese evacuees (被疏散者) from Libya who arrived on the island of Crete, Greece late in February.
These evacuees are now staying in a five-star hotel rented by the Chinese government. They will remain there until they head back home.
According to the Foreign Ministry, by March 2, all of the 35860 Chine had been evacuated from Libya. Most are now sheltering in third countries.
Du Minghao, a spokesman for China’s embassy in Libya, said dozens of Chinese citizens were injured during the events of recent weeks.
To protect the safety of overseas Chinese, China took action. From February 24, the nation conducted a great air, sea and land operation to evacuate Chinese citizens from the troubled country.
Emergency evacuation is basically a diplomatic (外交的) effort. It involved a combination of efforts by many government departments, overseas embassies and companies.
From flight tickets to customs services, a massive evacuation tests a nation’s ability to react in an emergency.
In Crete, the Chinese government rented four ferries and 11 hotel, and arranged flights to China. It would not charge for the evacuation, according to the Foreign Ministry.
China also took the unprecedented (史无前例的) step of sending a military ship to escort (护送) the evacuees. This was the first time that China had sent military power to protect evacuees. Besides China sent four military transporters (运输机) to bring home its people from Libya on February 28.
With China’s growing presence in foreign countries, especially developing regions(地区), Chinese diplomats will play more active roles in protecting Chinese lives and properties (财产) overseas in the case of unrest or natural disasters.
In 2006, China evacuated hundreds of Chinese citizens from the Solomon Islands (所罗门群岛), where Chinese were the main target of riots (骚乱) caused by political protests (抗议活动).

Babies given educational DVDs showed no greater improvement in their vocabularies than children not exposed to such programs, a study said.
In fact, researchers said their findings suggest babies learn best in everyday activities, without any exposure (暴露) to videos. The study, published in the journal (刊物) Psychological Science, tested 72 babies between the ages of 12 and 18 months. The babies were divided into four groups of 18, some of whom were shown a 39-minute video with images of common household objects. Babies from the first group watched the video in the presence of a parent. Children from the second group watched the DVD without an adult.
In the third group, parents were told to teach their children as many words as they could from a list of 25 also featured on the DVD, without allowing them to watch it. In the fourth group, no videos were shown and parents did not make any special effort to teach their children words.
After one month, all of the children were tested on their knowledge of a list of words that appeared in the DVD. The researchers found that the children who regularly watched the DVD during the period learned very little from their exposure to it, regardless of whether a parent accompanied them. Indeed, they learned no more words featured on the DVD than children who had never seen it.
“If you want to show your child ‘baby videos’, that’s fine. Just don’t expect the child to learn a great deal from it,” said lead author Judy DeLoache.
A set of “Baby Einstein” DVDs, one of the most popular brands of educational videos, costs around 46 dollars in the United States. A single DVD can cost about 20 dollars. But DeLoache said that her study showed the investment probably won’t pay off. “Your children are going to learn language anyway,” said DeLoache, adding that the best way to help young children learn new words is to simply talk to them.

Taylor Swift advises students
to read for a better lift
The Granny Award-winning superstar, Taylor Swift, was invited by a school to talk about her reading and writing skills. About 200 students had received a break from class to attend this activity. The children had been selected by their school because of improvement in their reading scores.
“I think that smart kids are the coolest kids,” Swift said as she was interviewed on stage by America’s Got Talent host Nick Cannon.
The 20-year-old singer and songwriter shared songwriting tips and childhood reading memories. She repeatedly suggested reading books as a path to a better life. “Without books, you can let little things pass you by, little details,” she said. “You might just let that pass you by if you have never read books that describe how beautiful they are.”
Swift did more than talk. As a native of Wyomissing (怀俄明州), her first record came out when she was 16. She said that she had always been a reader and was encouraged by her parents and teachers. She started writing poetry in second grade and by fourth grade had enough courage to participate in a national poetry (诗) contest. Studying Romeo and Juliet in ninth grade helped inspire her Top 10 single Love Story. “A lot of people who are interested in music are really drawn to poetry, because the words have a rhythm (押韵) and it comes together just right,” she said. “I love poetry, because if you get it right, if you put the right rhymes at the right ends of the sentences, you can almost make words bounce off a page.”
She said reading made her a better songwriter because it helped her understand how to paint a picture with a song. When asked how to encourage children who didn’t like to read, she suggested not taking on too much, perhaps starting with a short story or even a newspaper. “It doesn’t have to be a big, thick, long book,” she said. “You don’t have to pick up something that looks scary.”

A. The students, who were selected, were the ones who didn’t like reading.

Making our gala (春晚) more golden
Duan Lei: If I were director of next year’s Spring Festival Gala, I would give more opportunities to energetic students. Many teenagers are gifted in many ways. Their creative performances would help make the celebration more appealing to young people.
Wu Yunxuan: Older music might interest people from the older generations. If I were director of next year’s gala, I would invite singers like Kris Phillips and Hang Tianqi. They would remind our parents of their youth. It would also be an opportunity for teenagers to get a sense of the past.

On December 31, some leaders of our city, some parents and all the teachers and students took an active part in the loving-heart festival that our school holds every year. Different kinds of media followed and reported the activity.
Such an activity is made up of selling goods for charity, loving-heart supermarkets and singing platform. All of us are very interested in this action. The money from collecting donations added up to more than 15,000 yuan. All the fund will be used to help those students whose parents couldn’t get enough money for their education.
I did many good things in the festival. From home I took an MP3, some books, cards, tapes and valuable things I like best to our school. I helped sell most of the donated things and I charged as much money as possible. The money from collecting donations in our class listed the first among all the 36 classes.
My parents are very pround of me and my classmates because we did what we could to help those in need. I think I’ll make more efforts next year and after I’m admitted into some university I’ll come back again to join in this significant loving-heart festival.
