Background Multi-component apheresis is a new generation of blood component preparation methods that shortens the time between standard whole blood acquisition and preparation. Study Design and Method A single machine was designed to more conveniently collect 1 unit (250 ml) of red blood cells and 1 large volume unit (475 ml) of plasma simultaneously. The method uses 8% ACD-A and is tested in two European blood centers. 10 acquisitions per center, RBCs and plasma acquisition assessed in vitro, 10 acquisitions, and in vivo assessment of RBCs recovery rates. All RBCs use filters to reduce leukocytes. Half of the RBCs were stored in Adsol additive solution and the other half in other similar solutions (red blood cell stock solution). Results In a single needle procedure, 3 to 6 cycles were used, 27 minutes (range 20 to 44 minutes) to obtain a predetermined volume of RBCs and plasma, saline (275 ml) to compensate for more than the donation of standard whole blood Fluid volume.
