汉阙是一种具有象征性的装饰建筑,并无太大的实用功能。它多建于宫殿、城垣、祠庙和陵墓前,表威严,彰地位,守陵墓,通神灵。在我国现存的汉阙不足三十座,在四川遗存的就有二十座,其装饰图案题材可简单分为现实生活类和神话传说类,用来表现墓主权威地位,守护墓主,祈求墓主升天的涵义。四川汉阙遗存之多是全国之最,主要受到川内道教思想、社会经济、社会文化的影响。
