IBM, like other large manufacturing companies, is struggling to meet the environmental management standards that it has set for itself. The challenges are many, and technology is a key tool to meet these challenges. At the manufacturing and laboratory sites, the technology is mainly used in chemical tracking, wastewater monitoring and accident management. IBM’s own computer network plays an important role in this regard, but many of these technologies also apply to much smaller users. As with internal use technology, the application of IBM devices has reached a broader stage. IBM researchers and software developers from across Europe are constantly providing new applications for environmental control, planning, and education. The wider availability of personal computers, and the fact that so many solutions are written for the UNIX operating system, ensure their widespread use in large and small organizations.
