终身教育是1919年提出,在20世纪60年代开始兴起的一种教育思想。它反映了教育进步的一种世界性趋势。随着知识经济时代的到来,掌握知识的人才目益成为国家繁荣、民族振兴的决定性因素和主要资源,那种“一次性”的学历教育,把人生分成学习和工作两个阶段的观念和做法,已经不适应现代生产、科技进步和社会发展的要求。在发达国家,人们平均一生要更换五至八种职业,就是从事一种职业,岗位本身也不断提出新的要求。这意味着学习是一个终身的过程,职业培训、业余教育等教育形式将贯穿个人职业生涯的始终。
